State Revokes Another MVA Ruling, Restarts Cop Housing Loan Program | Bombay News

The list of reversals of decisions by Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi (MVA) is growing day by day.

On Tuesday, the government of Eknath Shinde-Devendra Fadnavis announced the restart of a housing loan scheme for police personnel that allows them to borrow from private banks at competitive interest rates.

“For the housing loan for police personnel, an interest subsidy program has been put in place. It was very appreciated by the gendarmerie and many people took advantage of it, but it was abandoned by the last government. We have decided to restart the program today,” Fadnavis said after a cabinet meeting in Mantralaya. “Anyone who was on the waiting list at the time will be covered by the scheme.”

HT had announced on September 1 that the state government planned to take over the facility.

The program was launched by the Fadnavis-led Bharatiya Janata-Shiv Sena Party government on April 10, 2017. Maharashtra State Police Housing and Welfare Corporation Limited was working as a facilitator after signing an agreement with private banks. No less than 5,017 staff members have taken out loans up to May 2019.

However, then-Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray abandoned the program on June 7.

On August 30, the state cabinet decided to provide housing for police personnel residing at BDD Chawls as service housing. They will now be allocated apartments in the redevelopment projects currently underway in Worli, Naigaon and NM Joshi Marg. The government decided to charge only the construction cost, which was determined as 15 lakh, for a 500 square foot house.
