FG secures $ 700 million loan from World Bank to tackle water shortage


The federal government revealed that it had secured a $ 700 million loan from the World Bank for specific water supply projects across the country.

Water Resources Minister Alhaji Suleiman Adamu made it known on Monday during a conversation with reporters on the sidelines of the ministry’s inaugural awards and recognition system awards ceremony in Abuja.

According to Adamu, the role of the federal government was to support state governments, which he said have the lion’s share of responsibility for water supply.

“What Nigerians need to understand is that the federal government is not responsible for providing water to their taps, it is the responsibility of state governments and that is why we have no responsibility for providing water to their taps. ‘Federal Office for Water.

“All the incentives such as the P-WASH action plan (Plan – Water, sanitation and hygiene), the declaration of the state of emergency by the president are efforts of the federal government to push the states to invest more in the water.

“We relaunched the water resources policy in 2016. We were able to generate 700 million dollars from the World Bank. This money will not be spent by the federal government; it is up to the States to improve their water supply situation ”, declared the Minister.

Seven states (Imo, Delta, Bauchi, Ekiti, Katsina, Kaduna and Plateau) are expected to be beneficiaries of the first phase of the World Bank loan.

The Awards and Recognition System awards ceremony was held to recognize and celebrate the employees of the ministry, who have achieved outstanding performance at their workstations.

Adamu expressed confidence that the National Water Resources Bill, currently before the National Assembly, will be adopted in 2022.

“It will be passed in 2022. At this point, the budget is the most important thing. The National Assembly is already absorbed by the 2022 budget. I can assure you that after the budget, their attention will return and we hope that it will be adopted in 2022 ”, declared the Minister.

He noted that instituting the rewards and recognition policy within the ministry was a deliberate way of inspiring public servants to be more effective.

According to him, the system recognizes that the staff has needs other than monetary.

“The intrinsic need for recognition. the encouragement and reward of outstanding performance is the other pillar on which the rewards policy is based. We must appreciate those who have helped us. A motivated workforce is an efficient workforce, ”he said.

The secretary of the government of the Federation (SGF), Mr. Boss Mustapha, regretted that the civil servants had not been encouraged and rewarded for a long time.

Mustapha, who was represented by the permanent secretary of the Ecological Fund office, Dr Habiba Lawal, said that when workers are rewarded, not just financially, they are motivated to contribute more to the goals of the organization.

He advised those who had not been recognized to devote themselves again to making the ministry more effective.

Federation Civil Service Chief Dr Folasade Yemi-Esan said staff welfare was on the priority list of the Civil Service Strategy and Implementation Plan (2021-2025 ).

Yemi-Esan, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Service Welfare Office, Ngozi Onwudiwe, said the reward system was vital for the implementation of the strategy, which aims to make service world-class and focused on people. citizens.
